Though the Kindle Reader has proved immensely popular, not every consumer wants to join the ranks of Amazon customers and buy one. I know, it may seem odd, if you love yours but there are different features that may be more desirable for some, so other eBook Readers that could prove a better choice. Here are a few of the best alternatives to the Kindle 3 today:
If you like to touch your gadgets, and enjoy the ease of navigation a touchscreen makes, the newest range of Sony eBook Readers should be your first choice. Their PR350 and PR650 products are particularly good looking, small and oh so tactile. There is no wireless connectivity though so if you want to download new material on the move you will have to look elsewhere. A good place to start (if you can afford it) is the Galaxy or Apple tablets. These will display ebooks in various formats once you download the relevant App. But they come at the cost of using back-lit displays and so are not so much fun out of doors.
If color is important in your life you may want a color display. Your choices are pretty limited. If you want to keep with the e-ink display that is easy to read in bright light you will have to wait a little while yet. The first of these types of eBook readers is due to be launched by Chinese manufacturer Hanvon late in 2010. But whilst popular in Asia they have never really attained the same success world-wide so it could be quite some time before they launch in the US.
The NookColor is a seven inch ebook reader that doubles (almost) as a tablet PC and features both color and touch-screen display. Wireless connection and a great range of books available probably make this a good choice if you want the shiniest, brightest eReader on the block. Of course moving away from e-ink would be a noticeable change for anyone familiar with this type of display. But for those of you yet to own an electronic reader it might be the right choice.
